What is the FHM Upcycling Challenge?
The FHM Upcycling Challenge is a design competition where creativity meets sustainability! This unique opportunity invites sewists of all ages and skill levels to create a one-of-a-kind garment using a curated box of high-quality fabrics and off-cuts. Beginning in early January, participants will be invited to pick up their 1-foot-square box from the Fashion History Museum and fill it with beautiful remnants of wool, linen, and other luxury fabrics. That's right—this year, participants get to choose their own fabric!
The challenge: transform these remnants into a finished piece, such as a jacket, coat, shirt, hat, or bag. The rules are simple—75% of your final piece must come from the provided materials. The remaining 25% is open for your choice of materials to complete the design.
The purpose of this challenge is to celebrate resourcefulness and innovation in fashion, highlighting the beauty and potential of upcycling. Participants will not only enjoy a rewarding design experience, but they’ll also play a key role in promoting sustainable fashion practices that engage with the broader conversation about reducing textile waste.
